Canisius Basketball Player Died of Natural Causes

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius junior forward Richard Jones died suddenly because of a genetically enlarged heart, an Erie County medical examiner determined in an autopsy.

The medical examiner’s ruling, which listed “natural causes” as the reason for death, was released by the school at the request of the player’s family on Thursday, a day after Jones died after collapsing during a workout at the school.

The condition, known medically as hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, is a disorder of the heart muscle that generally includes enlargement of the heart and a thickening of the walls of the left ventricle.
